I'm going to say this again - my white friends who aren't racists do not mind me talking about racism. If you find yourself disturbed by or uncomfortable with topics on racism, you may want to tell yourself some hard truths. And then, work on your findings. You may be racist.

New #LossAndDamage fund is major win for #climatejustice movements 🎉But pitiful progress on emission cuts, & Global North hasn’t delivered urgently needed finance. Until agreement on keeping fossil fuels in ground, our foot remains on accelerator on road to climate hell #COP27

Thoughts on "followers", "influence" and true human connection

I'm still battling with my old :birdsite: mindset that more followers are better. That I want "influence" and reach more people.

I don't. In the past years I arrived at the conclusion that people don't change their attitudes when they're yelled at by strangers on the internet. Science is with me here.

I was a happy camper here before November 2022. I enjoyed talking about things I love, the things that happen in my life, my struggles. I want to keep doing that. I don't seek an audience. I seek connection and compassion, as that's what I'm offering.

So no. I don't look for more followers or more influence. I want true human connections that need time and effort. I, like most of us, was trained to mistake the number of followers with people with whom I have a connection.
This is worth unlearning.

also I took the super lazy option for mastodon setup, digital ocean 1 click. Will probs move things off eventually but didn't want to commit that much time till I knew I was actually hanging about/using it

I've not done *ANY* work out of work hours for such a long time and my rustiness is showing; but it's nice I still can't just do the thing I logged on to do, upgrading postgres settings, ubuntu distro and messing with some cache config while I'm here... Ssh-ing into a server is like going to the super market for some bread and coming out with a trolley full of stuff you didn't need

Mention of alcohol

@RachAirStailc that is an impressive level of planning/self care! I honestly thought staying "on the wagon" would make things easier the day after but age seems to have more of an impact than the hangovers used to

Just starting the justweb.dev update so if I'm gone for a while I've goofed up :p

My boss, Matt Mullenweg, the boss of Automattic, owner of Tumblr, is looking for ex-Twitter employees for Tumblr, saying,

"we're putting on a fast track to see how they can help super-charge Tumblr. We can't absorb thousands of people, but I'd be open to hiring entire teams if they already work great together."

Helping activists, dissidents & journalists migrate to Mastodon

Hi everyone,

there are a number of people in this category who want to migrate to Mastodon and have questions about safety, security, etc. Are there any resources that you recommend?

Anyway

This sounds like snark but it's not

If you're on mastodon dot social or dot online

Leave that instance and get on a better one

They are de facto unmoderated instances due to their sheer size and many many instances have them limited

So for example, if someone from m dot s replies to this, I won't see it

Ever!

I made the switch to a about 8 months ago and on the whole it has been "fine" but the camera is really a pain, it can barely focus (even in good light) and it takes around 3-4 seconds from pressing the button to actually taking the image. By which point my cat has inevitably moved or stopped doing the cute thing i wanted a photo of :/ anyone found a way of making it less janky?

When it spins round it looks like the silhouette of an island with a particularly rugged coast line :p so much so @ecogof@twitter.com asked me which country it was the other day

My well worn pop socket (freeby from recruiter) fairly accurately represents the current state of erosion pretty well

Got a day off so listening to a book while doing some and is very interested in it!

Listening to The Wake Up by Michelle MiJung Kim (@mjmichellekim@twitter.com) - it's a good book and has made me think a lot about what my "activism" should look like, especially around what I am willing to give up in order to achieve equity/equality - comfort, convenience, career progression, wealth...?
